George Burns was an American comedian, writer, and actor known for his active work ethic. He stopped attending school in fourth grade to pursue show business full-time, but only gained recognition after partnering up with his future wife, Gracie Allen. After their marriage, the couple went on to star in The George Burns & Gracie Allen Show, which ran on CBS from 1950 through 1958.

It was on this day, November 1, 1983, that Burns signed a five-year contract with Caesar’s World in Las Vegas at the age of 87, jokingly having said, “I can’t afford to die when I’m booked.” Staying true to his comedian self, he further jested, “The last time I played Caesar’s Palace, it was owned by Julius.”

Burns won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Sunshine Boys and booked shows to celebrate his 100th birthday, but after suffering a head injury after a bad fall, the shows were cancelled. Burns passed away on March 9, 1996 at his home in Los Angeles.

A bar code automatically tells the life of a product without even saying a word. It is a set of geometric symbols that are interpreted by bar code scanners.

On this day, October 7th, in 1952, Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver patented the method of identification of products known as the bar code. With an inquiry from a local store owner, Woodland and Silver decided to create a tool that could automatically read product information during checkout. A year later, these two inventors deciphered a way to make checking out at the register easier for the customers and retailers through identifying patterns.

Almost 30 years later, the bar code was implemented in supermarkets and one of the first items to be scanned was a pack of Wrigley’s gum.

Henry Simon Winzeler originally wanted to become a dentist until his fascination for picture frames took control of his desires. He sold his dentist office and launched a manufacturing company, Ohio Art Company, with only 15 employees. From there it was history.

On this day, October 6th, in 1908, Henry Simon Winzeler founded the Ohio Art Company that manufactures metal picture frames and other novelty items. Exactly 52 years later the Ohio Art Company launched its first toy, Etch-A-Sketch. This classic innovation was invented as a drawing tool for preschoolers to use their imagination. Etch-A-Sketch became the toy store mainstay of the century with over 10 million sales.

The Ohio Art Company succeeded because it not only created innovative toys that promote creativity and learning, but it also produced diverse lithographic components for big businesses such as Starbucks and Disney.

The Pillsbury Corporation is America’s oldest food retailer from the 1800s. The company flourished as the top manufacturer of refrigerated and frozen dough goods: biscuits, crescents, cookies, pie crusts, waffles, pancakes, and bread.

On this day, October 4th, in 1989, the Grand Metropolitan, a British Beverage Company, buys The Pillsbury Corporation. Pillsbury’s progress slowed down and GrandMet stepped in and took over. Initially, Pillsbury was on attack and fought against GrandMet; however, their attempts were futile and shareholders accepted $66 per share that cost GrandMet $5.75 billion. The deal was official and Pillsbury became a subsidiary of the Grand Metropolitan.

At the end, GrandMet became the eighth largest company for consumer goods in the world, specializing in branded foods and drinks.
