Battle of Chrysopolis: Constantine the Great gains control over all of the Roman Empire.

In the year 324, two of the most powerful Roman emperors fought each other for control over the empire in a period known as the period of Tetrarchy. Constantine I and Licinius fought in the city of Chrysopolis near Chalcedon in modern day Turkey.

On this day September 18th, in 324 The Battle of Chrysopolis occurred and Constantine the Great gains control over all of the Roman Empire. After Constantine I led his forces into victory his opponent Licinius withdrew and fled to Chalcedon only to be chased and defeated by the great Emperor.

Constantine decided to spare Licinius’s life because he was his brother in law. After conquering the eastern portion of the Roman Empire, Constantine decided to give the east its own capital and chose Byzantium – renamed Constantinople. Constantine is famous for converting himself and his entire country to Christianity. His city Constantinople was deemed one of the greatest cities in the world at its time.
