Bob Dylan plays harmonica as back-up for Carolyn Hester in his first pro recording

Carolyn Hester is a popular 1960’s folk singer known for her efforts to revive folk music.

On this day, September 29th, in 1961 Bob Dylan plays the harmonica for Carolyn Hester’s third album. John Hammond, the album producer, was impressed and signed Dylan to Columbia Records a month later.

Bob Dylan, Dylan’s first album had little success selling only 5,000 copies. Columbia considered dropping him from the label, but Hammond fought for him adding another year to his contract.
