The beautiful capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, is founded by Pedro de Mendoza.

Pedro de Mendoza was from a noble family in Spain and a renowned Spanish Conquistador. In 1529, Mendoza offered Emperor Charles V to explore South America on his own expense. Being that the Mendoza family was in good favor with Charles V, his offer was sanctioned. Along with the Emperor’s giving Mendoza 2,000 men and 13 ships, came the clause that within two years Mendoza would establish a colony.

On this day February 2nd, in 1536, the city of Buenos Aires is founded by Pedro de Mendoza. Mendoza’s efforts are well documented; however, due to his ever diminishing health, he is said to not have had a key role in the foundation of the city. Mendoza had syphilis, a debilitating STD, and was bedridden for a good portion of his life.

Buenos Aires is the gorgeous and rambunctious capital of Argentina. It is the second largest city, coming after on Sao Paulo, with a population of 2.5 million . The etymology of Buenos Aires comes from Mendoza’s titling it Santa María del Buen Aire – Holy Mary of the Fair Winds. The Santa Maria was dropped during the 17th century. Buenos Aires is strongly influenced by European culture, which can be seen in its art, architecture, fashion, and cinema. Tourism has steadily been growing with its multitudes of beaches nearby, and in 2008 an estimated 2.5 million tourists visited the city.
