Don Larsen Pitches a Perfect Game in the World Series

MLB pitcher Don Larsen pitched for eight teams in his 14 year professional career and won two World Series Championships in the process. While Larson was not Hall of Fame caliber, he did show streaks of greatness.  Larson’s greatest single game accomplishment took place during the 1956 World Series while pitching for the New York Yankees.

On this day, October 8th, in 1956, Don Larsen became the first player to pitch a perfect game in the World Series. Larson’s improbable accomplishment came in the fifth game of the World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. During the game, Larson’s ball control was unmatched and the game was completed with only 97 pitches.  The Yankees won the series and Larson’s perfect game earned him the World Series MVP award and the Babe Ruth Award.

Larson continued to pitch until retiring in 1967 with a career record of 81-91 and a 3.78 ERA.
