The first known official basketball game is played at the YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts

Basketball is a tradition that many of us have loved for our entire life.  It is hard to imagine a time when basketball wasn’t being played.  In the 1800’s –
basketball games wasn’t something that existed.

It was on this day, January 20th, in 1892 – that the first even official basketball was played.  The game was played at a YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts.

One year earlier, James Naismith had invented the game of basketball at the YMCA gym.   The goal of the sports was to find something for students to play in between the baseball and football season.  This YMCA is now known as Springfield College, and the Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield as well.
