The first televised baseball game appears on WGN-TV an exhibition game between the Chicago White Sox and Cubs

On this day, April 16th, in 1940, baseball fan’s hearts throbbed, television sales increased, eyes twitched in anticipation for that moment, when the White Sox’ would hit the ball out of the park and beat the Cubs on Wrigley field in Chicago, Illinois. WGN-TV took the opportunity to boost its network ratings and televised the game live as their first major league sport game. It was the first century that the Major League athletics had televised games, and this new excitement appealed to many audiences. During the first televised World Series, over 3.9 million people were glued to television sets countrywide, setting a new record.
