Founding of the Polish State: Upon marrying Dobrawa of Bohemia, Mieszko I converts to Christianity.

Poland has a population slightly over 38 million and a land mass of 120,000 sq. miles. It is bordered by Belarus, Germany, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. Prior to 966, the Poles believed in Svetovid, a Slavic God of Warfare who always carried a sword and a drinking horn, he also rode white horses.

On this day April 14th, in 966, the Polish State is created by Mieszko I when he converts to Christianity. Dobrawa was a Bohemian Princess. It is historically debated whether she herself convinced her husband to convert or if it was part of the stipulations of their marriage, but either way her entering his life converted him.

When a ruler converts, so do his people. Prior to Mieszko I, Poland had consisted of many Pagan tribes which his predecessors had ruled. The majority of the Polish population converted to Catholicism.  Mieszko I is said to have been a wise ruler, politician, and military leader and was involved in conquest for most of his reign. No matter his reason for converting, it was a very wise move as no longer could the Holy Empire or any country attack him under the guise of Christianity. By converting, he protected himself and his people.
