Pitching a no-hitter is truly one of the greatest accomplishments an athlete can make. To get 27 major league batters out without giving up a base hit is a true accomplishment. Most pitchers never come close to throwing a no-hitter, so when it happens – it is exciting. And when a pitcher threw a no-hitter two games in a row – it became legendary.
It was on this day, June 15th, 1938, that Johnny Vander threw his second no-hitter in a row. Pitching in the first night game ever played at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, he shut out the Dodgers allowing 0 hits.
Vandeer remains the only Major League Baseball pitcher in consecutive starts to throw a no-hitter in back to back games. The first no-hitter came against the Boston Bees 4 nights earlier. It was maybe the greatest 18 inning stretch ever pitcher, and it was done by a 22-year-old lefty.
