The New York Islanders win their first ever NHL Stanley Cup in team history.

The Islanders have traditionally been a tortured franchise.  They struggle to win in the regular season and when they make the post-season, their struggles have continued.  But 1980 was a spectacular season for the New York Islanders.

It was on this day, May 24th, 1980, that the New York Islanders defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in a Stanley Cup Finals match.  The Islanders defeated the Flyers 4 – 2 and won their first ever Stanley Cup.

In Game six of the series, the one and only  Bob Nystrom scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime.  And in front of a home crowd, the Islanders won the memorable game 5 – 4.
