Princeton shocks the world when it defeats UCLA 43 – 41 – in the first round of the NCAA tournament

The NCAA tournament is one of the most exciting times to be a sports fan.  The primary reason for this is that the format allows for a Cinderella story as any team can beat another team in a winner take all high pressure college basketball game.  When upsets happen in the NCAA tournament, the winning team goes crazy and we as Sports fans get to bask in the excitement.

It was on this day, March 14th, 1996, that Princeton shocked the world and defeated UCLA in the first round of the NCAA tournament.  The final score was 43 – 41 as Princeton’s Gabe Lewullis scored the game winning basket on a backdoor cut with 2.2 seconds left in the game.

After the game Legendary Princeton coach, Pete Carril, said that if they played 100 times, UCLA would win 99 times, but one time Princeton would win, and they did.  UCLA was looking to repeat as NCAA champions which made the upset all the more special.
