Randall Cunningham Leads Quarterback Rushing

In the early years of NFL football, the quarterback played the stationary role of passer and field general, but in the 1980s, the athletic, scrambling quarterback started to become more prevalent.  Among the most successful of early scrambling quarterbacks was Randall Cunningham who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1985.

On this day, October 18th, in 1992, quarterback Randall Cunningham surpassed Fran Tarkenton’s all-time quarterback rushing record.  The record was broken on a 39 yard run against the Washington Redskins.  Cunningham’s accomplishment was hard earned. For the previous 7 years, Cunningham had established himself as one of the NFL’s best running quarterbacks and even challenged the single-season quarterback rushing record at one point.

That season, Cunningham led his team to the second round of the playoffs, but he also earned individual accolades during his career.  Cunnigham was named 1992 Comeback Player of the Year and was also selected as a Second-Team All-Pro.
