In a treaty, the Republic of Hawaii is incorporated into the United States.

Hawaii is the last state admitted to the United States, number 50.  It became a state in 1959, but prior to that was an organized territory of the U.S. Hawaii is an archipelago island consisting of eight islands and is situated over volcanoes. Natives of Hawaii trace their heritage to Polynesia.

On this day June 16th, in 1897, the Republic of Hawaii is incorporated into the U.S. with a treaty. In 1893 the Queen of Hawaii, Lili’uokalani, was overthrown, at which point a provisional government was established. This came to be known as the Treaty of Annexation of Hawaii, and its reasoning was that Hawaii was both dependent upon the U.S. due to commerce and within close proximity to the U.S., California to be exact.
