Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the first feature-length animated film, is released.

The 1937 American animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is based on the Brothers Grim German fairy tale.  It was produced by Walt Disney, who had to fight to get the film produced.  It was the first full-length animated feature in motion picture history, the first animated feature film produced in America, the first produced in full color, the first to be produced by Walt Disney Productions, and the first in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.

On this day, December 21, in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves premiered at the Carthay Circle Theater.  It was released to the rest of the nation two months later in February 1938.  The film was considered to be culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant by the US National Film Registry in 1989.  Also, it was one of two animated films to rank in the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 Greatest American Films of All Time in 1997.  The film was ranked number 49 on the list.
