Singing duo Sonny and Cher perform on “American Bandstand” for their first TV appearance.

Sonny and Cher were a singing duo that mainly sang American pop music and sang during the 1960’s and 70’s. They were husband and wife duo that had been backup singers for other artists at the beginning, but in early 1964 they released some songs under the duo name “Caesar and Cleo.” That did not attract them much attention so later that year they changed their name to Sonny and Cher and released “Baby Don’t Go,” which got them noticed.

On June 12th 1965, Singing duo Sonny and Cher performed on “American Bandstand” for their first TV appearance. American Bandstand was a show hosted by Dick Clark in which records would be played, artists would perform and their audience of teenagers would dance around.

Sonny and Cher started their career off as backup singers, but made it big and even after their divorce Cher went on to be a solo singer. Together they sold around 80 million records worldwide. When Cher went solo Sonny went into becoming a U.S representative in congress.
