Technicolor film is introduced with the release of “Toll of the Sea”

The process of Technicolor film outshone its predecessor technique, Britain’s Kinemacolor, because of its saturated color palettes. Because of its rich colors, the technique was primarily used for filming musicals like “The Wizard of Oz.”

On this day, November 26th, in 1922, Technicolor film was introduced with the release of “Toll of the Sea.”

Although “Toll of the Sea” was the second Technicolor feature film, it was still a noteworthy production. The movie was the first color feature to be made in Hollywood, and it was also the first color feature that did not need a special projector. It premiered in New York City at the Rialto Theater.
