Donald Wetzel, Tom Barnes and George Chastain receive a patent for the ATM

The first ATM, or automated teller machine, was installed at the Rockville Center in the New York Chemical Bank. It was located outside on the street, only dispensing cash, so it did not entirely replace a bank teller.

It was on this day, June 4th, in 1973 that Donald Wetzel, Tom Barnes, and George Chastain received a patent for the ATM machine.

Wetzel said that he came up with the idea for his invention while waiting in a long line at a Dallas bank. At the time of his idea, Wetzel was the Vice President of Product Planning at Docutel, which is the company responsible for developing automated baggage-handling equipment.
