Cartoon character Woody Woodpecker first appears with release of Lantz’s “Knock Knock”

“Knock Knock” was part of the “Andy Panda” series produced by Walter Lantz.  It stars Andy Panda, his father Papa Panda, and Woody.  The woodpecker constantly harasses the pandas just because he can.  The pandas try and capture him by sprinkling salt on his tail, and the attempt proves to be a success when the salt mound becomes so heavy, Woody cannot fly away.  He is then taken to the funny farm.

It was on this day, November 25, 1940, that the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker first appeared with release of Lantz’s “Knock Knock.”  Mel Blanc was the original voice of Woody, followed by Ben Hardaway, and finally by Grace Stafford.  “The Woody Woodpecker Show” was first broadcast on television in 1957 and has appeared alongside other famous cartoon characters, most notably in the 1988 film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”  Woody has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
